Staff: Roger Day

Bio

Roger Day, 23, is the newest member of the staff at Hillside. He has been the Youth Pastor since March 3, 2008. He and his wife, Jenna, are in fact moving to Julian as this article is being written. They are moving into the former "Sunshine House," the small house directly behind the church building. The Church will be welcoming them with a Kitchen and Pantry Shower during our Fifth Sunday Potluck (or "Pot Blessing" as the case may be) on March 30. They hope to be officially in their new home this weekend.

Roger and Jenna may still be considered newlyweds. They met at a Bible Study at Palomar College. "We were friends for a year, dated for a year, and engaged for about six months, " Roger said. They were married on July 7, 2007.

Roger has two siblings. His brother Cameron is 21 and sister Laurel is 18. Cameron was ill when he was younger, and missed a year of school. He was about to miss another year, so his parents decided to home school him. When Roger found out about it, he decided that he wanted to be home schooled, too. "It's one of the best things I ever did," he declared. He was home schooled from 7th -12th grade. He attended Palomar College (beginning while still in high school) and then went on to San Diego Christian College, from which he graduated with a major in Bible/Pastoral Ministry in 2007. He attended Emmanuel Faith Church in Escondido.

Jenna is now a student at CSU San Marcos. She expects to graduate this spring with a major in English. She plans to get a teaching credential, and would like to teach A. P. (Advanced Placement) English.

Roger said he became a Christian at the age of 5. One night, he couldn't sleep, walked to his parent's bedroom, and said,"Mommy, can I be a Christian?" His favorite Bible verse is John 8:58: "Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM."

Roger's hobbies include computer gaming (strategy and role playing games), guitar, writing, and paint ball. He almost considers the research that he's doing for his job to be a hobby as well.

He stated that his goal is "to be productive before I get raptured!"

When asked if he'd ever done anything exciting or adventuresome, he told about playing army as a kid, about 13 or 14 years old. They would go out into their neighborhood in Escondido, and some neighbor called the cops on them, because their guns looked so realistic. That happened two or three times. He said the cops enjoyed it!

Finally, I asked if Jenna would be working with him. He replied, "Well, they've hired Roger, not Jenna, but she'll be around and available--especially to talk to the girls, if they want a girl to talk to."
